Heim, Victor 'Vic' A.

June 14, 1921 – November 2, 2018

Victor A. Heim passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2018 in Orange, California at the age of 97.

Vic was born in Orange on June 14, 1921 to Carl O. Heim and Emma (Grote) Heim. One of six children, he was the last of the siblings to pass away. A lifelong resident of Orange, he attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Orange Union High School and graduated from Santa Ana College in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served at the Santa Ana Army Air Station for 3 years. While serving at the Air Station, he met the love of his life Hattie Elizabeth (Betty) Derigo of Huntington Beach. They married in January 1945.

In 1947 Vic joined the County of Orange Auditor’s office as a clerk. In 1957 the County Board of Supervisors appointed him County Auditor. In 1958 he ran and won election to the position and thereafter ran unopposed for the next 6 four-year election cycles. He retired in 1984 after serving as Auditor-Controller for 27 years and serving the County for a total of 37 years. Even though elected, Vic viewed his role as that of a public servant rather than a politician. He served Orange County with great humility and integrity but, when asked how he served so successfully for so many years, he always gave credit to the many people who faithfully worked alongside him.

Vic deeply loved his family, his friends and his Church. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, faithfully teaching Sunday School for over 20 years and serving as the secretary of the congregation for 50 years. He developed many friendships through his church, work at the county, the Santa Ana Lions Club and his weekly McDonalds group. He and Betty loved to travel after his retirement where they made many new friends. But Vic’s greatest love was, by far, his family. His three sons, grandkids and great grandkids brought him great joy and he loved to spend time with them whenever he could. His love, faith, guidance, honesty and generosity are his legacy to them and to all who knew him.

Vic was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty and granddaughter, Natasha Heim. He is survived by his three sons, Phil, Mark (and his wife Jane) and Jim (and his wife Sheila), seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on December 1, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1250 East Heim Avenue, Orange, CA 92865. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran School Scholarship fund at the same address.
